Valentine’s Day … No other day evokes stronger feelings from both the lovesick and those entirely sick of love.
But this isn’t about that kind of love … It’s about creating and maintaining the love at the office.
We spend most of our days at work, so it pretty much becomes our second home. Therefore, as the king of the castle, it’s important to create an organisation that employees are happy to go to every day.
While it might be easy to keep your eye firmly on the performance of the company and forget about those little things that keep employees happy and motivated, as an employer, you need to constantly work towards creating a happy and healthy work environment. This not only helps you retain employees, but attracts good ones, too.
Below are some tips on how to build a lively, positive and cheerful work environment, and ensure that staff feel the love every day:
• Culture fit
Like the saying goes, birds of a feather flock together. Most organisations have a specific culture that they try to stick to. This is, of course, dependent on the type of services you provide, but once a culture is established, it’s important to hire talent that fits. If you’re a bubbly and quirky team, keep it that way by finding likeminded individuals.
• Focus on the positive
Many people debrief by going over what didn’t work. Turn that around and focus on the positive. This doesn’t mean that you should ignore the things that need to be improved on, it just means that when you’re looking for the good, you’ll find the good. If you look for the bad, everything will seem bleak.
• Curiously concerned
Showing a little interest in the extended lives of your staff goes a long way. It shows that you care about your team beyond their daily deliverables, and makes them want to go the extra mile. So, remember to slot in a simple, “how are you?” from time to time.
• Outside the box
Treat people to something surprisingly good and fun. A day at the amusement park, a movie in the afternoon with popcorn, or a head massage at their desk. Anything you can think of to make your team feel like you’re doing a little extra will make them feel appreciated. If your company culture allows for extra fun then add cool games that they can play during lunchtime or when they just need to take a break, like pool or ping pong.
