Business and HR leaders are continually encouraged to grow the people for whom they’re responsible. And that’s excellent advice in light of the fact that one of the key ways to retain talent (particularly younger talent) is to provide them with growth opportunities.
Such opportunities can come in many forms; they can be training courses or development programmes, collaboration opportunities with other members of their own team, or collaboration opportunities with people in other divisions and even with people in other parts of the country or the world, whether in person (being transferred to another country for a period of time) or working with them in a virtual setting.
So, it’s all about a “grow, grow, grow” strategy.
If, therefore, you’re a committed HR professional who’s keen to help their company attract and retain top talent, you would be wise to focus on providing growth opportunities for your people.
To do this, you will need to get to know the particular needs and aspirations of your talent in order to be able to personalise their growth opportunities. A “one size fits all” approach will simply no longer work. Talented people want to grow according to their own interests, needs and aspirations.
If this is what you’re already doing, well done!
But … and that’s a beeg “but” …
What are you doing about your own growth needs?
There’s not much point in your growing everybody else – while you’re quietly stagnating. You also have to keep growing. The whole idea of lifelong learning is no longer a “nice to have” idea – it’s a “must do”.
So, if you’re quietly falling behind everyone else, sooner or later your stunted growth is going to show, and count against you, putting your own career and career aspirations in jeopardy.
Now, before you go into panic mode, there’s a solution!
